The best places to spend New Year’s Eve

New Year in Scotland

Scotland is the home of New Year’s Eve - or Hogmanay - celebrations so there’s nowhere better to ring  in the bells. Make Scotland your New Year base and celebrate with steak pie, Auld Lang Syne and a dram of malt whisky. Cailean House, overlooking the Tay Valley is a great choice for a New Year’s Eve break, with cosy log fires, an outdoor hot tub and over five acres of estate for a New Year’s Day walk.

New Year in the Cotswolds

See in the New Year in the Cotswolds, where you can wander through pretty villages, call into a pub for a cosy drink, or climb a hill, before getting back to your country manor for a New Year party. The Barn At Windrush, which has seen in over 500 new years since it was built, is perfect for a small gathering of up to 12 people. If you have a larger party, book the entire Windrush Hyde Estate, which comprises four converted barns and the original manor house.

New Year in the Lake District

Escape to the Lake District for a special New Year’s Eve celebration. Stay in a big house with mountain and lake views and celebrate New Year in style, with log fires burning, a large dining room for your New Year feast and comfortable bedrooms for everyone. And what better place for your New Year’s Day walk than the Lake District National Park, where you can blow away the cobwebs of the old year and make your plans for the new one. Have a look at Mereview Manor, a luxury house sleeping up to 18, on the shores of Lake Windermere.

The best amenities for a New Year trip

A private bar

To get the New Year’s Eve party off to a flying start, choose a house with its own private bar, where you can serve Champagne, cocktails and beers. We have plenty to choose from, including converted pubs that have retained their bar, such as Riverbank Inn, to relaxed party houses with a bar off the the living room, like Madoc Manor. If you prefer something a little more classic, Magpie Farm has a full size snooker room with its own bar.

A games room

A games room is a great addition to your New Year celebrations. It’s a place for the children to peel off to if the adults are annoying them, it’s where the more competitive members of your party can match up against each other and it gives everyone something to do if the winter weather is keeping you indoors. Many of our properties have amazing games rooms with all sorts of fun things to do, like table tennis, pool, board games and other activities. Have a look at Devonshire House where the games room has a snooker table, sofas, Sky Sports TV, board games, books and piano.

A hot tub

A hot tub might not be the first thing you think of when you are planning your New Year celebrations but it’s one thing that’s guaranteed to please everyone. A dip in the hot tub is just what you’ll need on New Year’s Day and it’s a great way to start the new year. Stay at The Malvern Lakehouse in Worcestershire for a hot tub with a view or try Mynach House in Wales for a more sheltered hot tub.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What's the best Champagne for New Year?

You can’t go too far wrong with the big names, for example, Bollinger, Moët & Chandon or Pol Roger (reputedly Winton Churchill’s favourite). However, if you’re not serving it until midnight and you have a crowd, you may be able to sneak in a supermarket own label as palates maybe somewhat jaded at that stage. And to be fair, some of the own label Champagnes punch well above their price bracket these days.

  • What are the best dishes for New Year's Eve?

If you are on holiday, you don’t want to be too tied to the kitchen. It’s a great idea to start with some easy-to-assemble appetisers such as smoked salmon blinis or crostini. Another smart starter is a no-cook meze-style spread of dips and flatbreads, served with olives, sundried tomatoes and other nibbles. A big one-pot main course makes life easy, whether it’s a tagine, boeuf bourguignon or lasagne. Don’t forget the vegetarian options though. And if you’re staying in one of our Scotland houses, then the Scottish tradition must be followed – steak pie for everyone!

  • Can I get a supermarket delivery to the house?

Yes, you can. All the major supermarkets will deliver to our houses. It’s wise to book this in advance as it’s a busy time of year and you don’t want to get caught out. Also, don’t forget about those quirky supermarket substitutions that can catch you out. If you get your delivery arranged for shortly after you arrive, this gives you chance to collect locally any of the items that are missing.

  • What are the best family movies for New Year's Eve?

New Year movies should capture the feel-good factor and have broad appeal if you are away as a group, particularly if you’ve got children. Easy choices include classic rom coms, such as Notting Hill, good-hearted movies, such as Forrest Gump, or animations where the children and the adults can both find something to enjoy, such as Toy Story. Musical films, such as La La Land or Carousel ,are hard to beat, and finally, epic adventure film like the Indiana Jones series of films or The Lord of the Rings are certain to be crowd pleasers.

  • What's good to do on New Year's Day?

After a late morning, New Year’s Day calls for a head-clearing group walk. We’re lucky that so many of our properties are in beautiful parts of the country, where you can get some much needed exercise and enjoy stunning views at the same time. Many also have their own estates or extensive grounds to explore. You might decide a New Year’s Day lunch is on the cards at a local pub or restaurant. Check out the house details on our website where you’ll find some recommendations. Do book as early as possible though, particularly as you will be in a large group.
